The Asmat ( Wood Carver Tribe )

Visiting the famous tribe of wood carver Called Asmat, is a unique way to see and experince for a lifetime memories. The Asmat Tribe is well known for their wood carving and sculptures. They have created some of the finest wood sculptures the world has seen, and it comes as art that is exemplified with strong lines and designs. These talented artists can easily carve a sculpture out of a tree, and they do it with such fine workmanship that it is easy to see why their works are coveted by art collectors worldwide.

Not only that, historically, the Asmat people were documented headhunters and cannibals, believing they could absorb the spiritual power of their enemies through their skull. An intricate initiation ceremony involving captured heads invited young Asmat boys into manhood.

Although there are reports that the Asmat continued to practice cannibalism into the 1990s, Catholic missionaries condemned headhunting upon setting up a post in the region in the early 1950s.

Tour Itinerary

Day. 01

Jakarta – Timika

On arrival in Timika city, proceed to your booked hotel, check in, go out for lunch and free afternoon, our crew will do shopping for necessary supplies. Dinner will be at local restaurant. Back to the hotel & overnight.

Day. 02

Timika – Agats

After breakfast, we will catch a flight to Agats city, check in at accommodation, go out for lunch, and do check and recheck for our necessary supplies, check the boat condition/preparations. When things got checked, back to your accommodation and wait for dinner time and overnight.

Day. 03

Agats – Senggo

After breakfast, we will start ride out to Senggo village. It takes us 6-8 hours, it depends on the river condition ( when it low tide then it will take us slower but otherwise when it high tide it takes us faster ). We will fix a quick lunch or we will fix lunch boxes before we leave. On arrival in Senggo village, we will check in and stay with locals for 2 days here exploring, practicing, documenting/filming and experience some local’s daily activities. Lunch and dinner will be fixed. Overnight stay at local house.

Day. 04 – 06

Still In Senggo

We will spend 3 full days with local Asmat tribe. We will do filming with different daily activities with Asmat tribe. We will talk and let them know the main idea/purpose of the your visiting and we will hear what they would offer and show us their culture of their daily life you can do filming. ( This what excactly documentary means to be documented ).

Day. 07

Senggo – Citak

After breakfast, we will start riding way up to Citak area or people say the border between Korowai & Asmat region tribes. On the way we can do fishing and fix a quick lunch before we continue. After lunch we will keep riding up to Citak. Check in at local’s accommodation and take a rest, hang around while our team prepare dinner. Overnight at Citak.

Day. 08

Citak – Mabul – Korowai

After breakfast, we will continue to reach Korowai Tree house tribe by stoping at the Mabul village at the starting point to enter the Korowai rainforest to catch the Korowai tribe. If we will arrive earlier we will enter into the settelements of Korowai tribe but if we are late regarding the river condition or boat unexpected situations we will overnight stay at Mabul. Lunch and dinner will be fixed.

Day. 09 – 11

Still With Korowai Tribe

We will spend 3 days with Korowai Tribe and during 3 days stays, you will have a chance to see, experience and share with the beauty and menacing power of one of the wildest stretches of rainforest in the world with the tribe of Korowai. The participants of the expedition will get an opportunity to admire the untouched flora and fauna, learn a few basic rules of survival in the jungle, possibly with a chance of going hunting. We’ll also see how to make sago, build a trap for a wild pig.

Not only the mentioned things to see and experienced but there are many things can be seen, experienced and shared with Korowai tribes. Thet are alwaays eager to show what they got as part of their life. And ofcourse this kind of tours would be the authentic and unique lifelong experience for you.

During 3 days stays, we will share many things with locals; collecting local foods, cooking, serving and enjoying what we got together with Korowai tribe. This means no border or brings us togetherness as one family in Korowai Local Families.

Day. 12

Korowai – Dekai

After breakfast, we will start riding way down to Pepera and continue to ride up to Dekai / Yahukimo City. Upon arrival in Logpon, get your car drive heading to Dekai. After arriving in Dekai, check in at your hotel, take a rest, clean up our bodies and wait for dinner. Dinner could be at hotel or at local street restaurant.

Day. 13

Dekai – Jayapura

After breakfast, take a short transfer to Dekai airport to catch your return flight to Sentani, Jayapura. Upon arrival in at Sentani airport, proceed to your booked hotel, check in and get some rest and wait for dinner. Lunch will be in Dekai or near Sentani upon arrival. Overnight at hotel.
