Papua offers one of the most remote and adventurous travel experiences in Southeast Asia & South Pacific. However, traveling to this wild frontier requires careful preparation. This guide provides practical tips to help you navigate Papua and make the most of your journey.
How to get to Papua ?
Most travellers arrived and depart from West Papua by air through the popular gateways of Sorong, Manokwari, Jayapura (Sentani), Timika or Biak. The only direct link is between Jakarta and Jayapura with Garuda Air; all other routes are serviced by other regional carriers and generally go via Denpasar, Makassar and Ambon with Lion Air, Sriwijaya Air and Batik Air. If you are planning to visit Baliem Valley, Korowai Tribe, Lorenzt National Park then you should book your flight from Jakarta to Sentani Airport or from Bali To Sentani and take a connecting flight via Trigana Air or Wings Air. Note, Garuda airline has a direct flight to Sentani, Jayapura and Sorong Aiport from Jakarta and if you are coming from Bali then Lion Air is available with one stop in Makasar or Ambon.
Do i a travel permit to explore Papua ?
Travel permits surat jalan are required for all travel in Papua beyond the main coastal towns. Permits are mostly easily acquired in Jayapura and Biak, where they’re usually obtainable in one day, although they are usually available at the other non-permit towns as well. Two passport photos and the copy of passport are required.
The permit must list all the places you’re planning to visit, no changes allowed, unless you get a new one in a main town. Whenever you arrive in a new town in Papua, you have to get your permit stamped at the police station. Make lots of copies, you’ll need them during you travels to show the local authority at the every post you are passing by. Is safe to travel & explore Papua ?
Papua is generally safe to travel and a peaceful region, there are some areas that are considered high-risk due to political instability, poverty, health services and limited infrastructure.
Papua has a history of political unrest, with separatist movements and protests occurring sporadically. In recent years, there have been reports of violence and clashes between security forces and separatist groups. However, most of these incidents are isolated and do not affect tourists. There are some parts of Papua even in Central and the Highland regions are warned not to travel but some parts of these regions are safe to travel.
